Fue fundado como colonia alemana el 23 de agosto de 1887 por el Dr. Bernhard Förster. Su pretensión era crear una comunidad modelo en el Nuevo Mundo y probar su paradigma racial ario. Uno de los rubros más importantes es la producción de yerba mate.
